BEST BLOG SEO TIPS and TRICKS

Get Your Blog Noticed - Expand Readership - Dramatically Enhance Your SEO

Blogs have once again become the new land grab, and nothing improves seach engine rankings more than consistently promoting worthy blogs. This blog will identify for you best practices, so let’s start at the A #1 Core:

CONTENT

Worthwhile content is your point of entry: strive for it to be relevant to what you do, newsy, catchy, and informative. This does the most important thing, it adds value to what you’re promoting by imparting useful information to your reader, i.e., you are not wasting their time. Structurally, you must get right to the point, or your reader is gone in a click. Additionally, writing relevant content will naturally populate your blog with important key words, as you know your product best.

After the hard part, the rest is a rather mechanical hit list you should adhere to for taking advantage of best SEO tricks in order to expand your reach, and give legs to your branding. So, lets start at the beginning:

  4. Post Length Longer posts, 2000 + words, ordinarily rank better, given the content is actually valuable, and is directly relevant to search queries. Pick a topic based on what you’re trying to promote, and write a really thorough and helpful article about it. Not only will your post get picked up by search engines like Google and Yahoo, these posts are also more likely to be shared on social media, which increases your traffic, awareness, and so forth. Do not add fluff though, keep it substantive!

HOW TO SET UP YOUR WRITTEN COPY

1. Post Titles

Keep them short, catchy, and make sure they include your primary keyword(s)! This will have a positive impact on Click Through Rates (CTRs), which in turn impacts how you rank in searches. Your blog post title doesn't always have to be super dazzling, but make certain it’s on point, clearly indicative of your content, and attention grabbing.

2. H1 Title, aka Blog Title

Every blog post should have ONE unique H1. This is the title of your post, the top level title, and search engines will crawl your content and recognize that section as the most important topic of the page/post. This is naturally done where you fill out the title field. Do not add more H1 tags within the blog though, just the one in the title. For example, this blog’s H1 is BEST BLOG SEO TIPS & TRICKS.

3. H2 Titles, aka Headers and Subheaders

Unlike the H1 tag, you CAN have more than one H2 tag on a post/page, and you probably will. These H2s should indicate the second level important topic(s) within your content. Example, my first H2 Title is Get Your Blog Noticed - Expand Readership - Dramatically Enhance Your SEO.

5. Internal Links

Every post should have at least 2 - 3 links to other posts you’ve written. You want to make those links natural and useful, without adding too many. Focus on adding links that improve the users experience: it makes it easier to get more of your content, and spend more time on your site. Search engines also like when you link to other content within your site because they see how you’re adding value by self-referencing.

6. External Links

Yes, it’s OK to link to other websites besides your own! It’s through links that search engines establish how relevant your website is, which is why you should link to external content (e.g., websites, blog posts, videos, etc.) related to your topic. Linking to your competitors and peers is actually a good thing, because search engines then associate you with them so you might improve your rankings on certain topics. If you are writing a long blog post, best practice is to link to select external links as a way to support your content and, in the search engine’s eyes, add value for the reader. This influencer, for example, Rand Fishkin, has loads of worthwhile information on linking, SEO in general, and more, that can enrich your search engine artillery even more.

7. Hashtags

#Hashtagging is a simple yet powerful hack to get your content indexed.

#Hashtagging is a simple yet powerful hack to get your content indexed.

Hashtag your blog with precision, using words and phrases that literally describe your blog topic. Always add your branded company hashtag as well. In addition, hashtag photos and videos; these are indexed by search engines and used for internal site searches too. When hashtagging across platforms stay consistent and use the same handful, unless of course something relevant is trending on Twitter, for example, and you choose to add that to the twitter post, which you absolutely should, such #TBT or what have you - obvious to say, but the more people seeing your post the better.

HOW AND WHY TO USE IMAGES AND VIDEO

1. Images

Here are 3 Great SEO strategies Neil Patel conveys to you, that will boost your rankings, and I recommend you watch.

Posts and pages with images have higher rankings than those without. You probably know that search engines cannot crawl images in the same way that they can crawl text, but they still make note of where they are in your content and favor them. You should at minimum include one image for every blog post, but freely add more if they add value.

2. Image Descriptions

I mentioned that search engines can’t crawl an image, but they CAN crawl image descriptions, which is why you should always clearly describe what the image is of. For one thing this will help your post ranking, but it will also get the image itself ranked by the search engine, which could in turn drive traffic to your website. This means every photo should have a descriptive caption.

3. Video

Adding video(s) to your blog is also something search engines reward because they’re increasingly favored. Obviously, keep the videos relevant to your content so that your audience is engaged, and exploring different media options. You can either upload your own content, or embed another content creator’s video. YouTube is owned by Google, so whenever possible embed a YouTube link because it will be more heavily favored than other video hosting sites like Vimeo.

HOW TO HARNESS SOCIAL MEDIA

1. Share posts on Twitter

Certain search engines like Google have an indexing setup with Twitter where they crawl tweets and links within tweets. If a link is tweeted, it will mark higher in rankings than a link that’s not tweeted. Be sure to always use CTA’s (Calls To Action), like this: Click Here to see my twitter posts.

2. Share posts on Pinterest

In the same way you’ll share every post on twitter, you should also share every post on Pinterest. Pinterest SEO is a whole other universe, but it’s definitely worth exploring as you promote your company, and Pinterest posts also get indexed by google, which is a huge asset for FREE listings. This has done wonders for the indexing of my paintings, another endeavor and business of mine.

3. Share posts on Facebook

Obvious, but to be clear, by sharing all your posts on Facebook, you'll get extra links back to your site, increase traffic, and, ideally, get more social shares.

RSS FEEDS AND THE BLOGOSPHERE

Many people follow and read blogs like others read popular news portals, or follow twitter feeds. RSS feeds allow people to subscribe to your blog, and then they’ll be automatically notified when you publish another. You can sign up for an RSS feed here, Feedly being the reigning champ at the moment.

The Apple News Channel will publish your blog and make it available through their network for iPads and iPhones, clearly this can be extremely powerful. Go HERE to follow the steps to plug in your blog.

Note: to be picked up by APN you must have at least three blogs published, and then you must blog a consistent rhythm, one per week, one every two weeks, three per week, whatever your strategy determines, and then you have to stick to it as routinely as possible.

A Couple More Do’s

1. Link Bait (optional, good where appropriate)

Another sometimes useful trick is to embed outreach in your content is by featuring other bloggers, business owners, and relevant individuals. For example, the influencer Neil Patel consistently has powerful information in this sector. This content type is called Link Bait, because it attracts links by showing respect and promoting those included, and adds depth to your post. This increases odds that they’ll share your content, or link to it on their website. You can do this by mentioning them in a meaningful fashion, linking to their website, or even asking them directly to contribute to your content. The best part is that by including outside experts you can make your content even better for your audience. If the person you’re including doesn’t know you’re writing about them, make sure to let them know, either by emailing them or mentioning them on social media.

2. Build an Email List (not necessarily for SEO, but great to nest into your blog post - highly recommended)

Hopefully, you’re already building an email list on your website, another arrow in your marketing quiver. Each blog should have an email capture form or link to your formatted email host (like Mailchimp, Convertkit, etc.), if you would like to join mine, please submit the form to the left. If you only send emails to your list always trying to sell something, your Subscribers will eventually become Uns. Instead, add value between sales promotions by sending them useful and engaging blog posts. You can do this in a Newsletter Format, give them a good taste of your blog - but not the whole thing - with a Read More button at a strategic spot that points them to the blog post on your site. Not only will this get potential customers back to your site, but they may also share your content on the socials, expanding your reach and profile.

Hope this is helpful! Please share freely, and reach out to me Here with questions.

Good luck,
